The Data Driven Innovation (DDI) Women in Data campaign showcases the rich landscape of women working with data science, technology, innovation and related roles in Scotland’s booming data science and technology sectors, from digital education to astrophysics, students through to CEOs and MSPs.

CEO Gillian Docherty OBE, Delivery Director for UNICEF Data for Children, Alex Hutchison, and Head of Business Development Jude McCorry took part in the Women in Data campaign, where University of Edinburgh PhD sociology candidate Poppy Gerrard-Abbott interviewed them about their leadership roles at Scotland’s Innovation Centre for data and AI and their views on gender equality in the field.

Read the interviews with our inspiring Women in Data:

  • Gillian Docherty OBE, CEO, The Data Lab
  • Jude McCorry, Head of Business Development, the Data Lab
  • Alex Hutchison, Delivery Director of the Data for Children Collaborative with UNICEF, The Data Lab

The Women in Data campaign aims to provide role models in Edinburgh, especially for women and girls, showing that women are at the forefront of technological and scientific advancement in Scotland and challenging perceptions that scientific and innovation work is ‘just for men’.

“If they cannot see it – they cannot be it”

The project has started long-term conversations internal and external to the university on the state of gender equality in these sectors and industries, following on from the launch of the campaign at the Scotsman & DDI conference on 10th September 2019, where the Women in Data launch session welcomed Caroline Criado-Perez, author of ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’ and a panel with Open Knowledge Foundation’s Catherine Stihler OBE, computing Professor Gillian Hogg from Heriot-Watt University, Talat Yaqoob from the STEM gender equality consultancy ‘Equate Scotland’ and digital analyst Rachel Miller from Accenture.

The Women in Data campaign will release a report on the project and its major findings from the interviews, situated in a literature review of research on STEM gender equality in a Scottish and Edinburgh context. This will be available in December 2019 on the DDI website.
